Product Spotlight:Best Two-Way Radio The Best Two-Way RadioI would be lost without a good two-way radio on my family adventures, camping, hunting, and fishing trips. We are spoiled by our phones, where any of our friends and family are just a quick call or text away. When you are off the beaten path, such as up in the mountains, cell service can be spotty and in a lot of places non-existent. I always make sure when I’m out hiking, or up in the woods, that each of my family members have a good two-way radio with them, in case they get into a position that they need some help, or just to be able to check in. There are a few features that are a must have any time I am looking for a new set of two-way radios. To me, it’s very beneficial to spend the extra money and buy a good quality set of two-way radios, because they could be life saving, and if it helps in the case of one emergency, it was well worth the cost, for them to function perfectly when you need them the most. Cheaper two-way radios are harder to use, they don’t sound as clear, and they don’t last as long. I have tried low end units before, and they are now in the kids toy box, only to be used at home when they are playing. The biggest problem with them was that the buttons didn’t work very well, and the batteries drained in just a few hours of use. Lesson Learned! Some of the features that are very important to me, on a good set of two-way radios, are the warranty. Any manufacturer that doesn’t have at least a two year warranty on what they advertise as a durable product, is not worth me buying. Manufacturers would stand by their product if they felt the quality was there. I use my radios a lot on fishing trips, and up in the mountains, where the weather can be unpredictable in a moments notice, so it’s important to be waterproof, and rugged. I prefer radios with the strength to be rated at over 30 miles, to have the best chance that I will be able to reach someone in an emergency. I also like to have access to the emergency weather channels, because when I see weather sneaking in, I need to know what to expect, so I need to know if I need to find shelter, or start heading down the mountain. The top model and brand that I have found that works for me is the Midland GXT1050VP4 Two-Way Radio. It is a very rugged two-way radio that will last me and my family a long time, even in the rough conditions that we take them into. They have a three Year Warranty, and they include 22 Channels PLUS 28 EXTRA CHANNELS. It offers clear, crisp communication with easy button access. Most importantly, it is JIS4 Waterproof, with protection in all directions against light rain or splashing water. I also like that they have 285 Privacy Codes, which gives you up to 6270 channel options to help you block other conversations so that you can communicate directly with your friends and family without the interference of other conversations, and less chance that someone will be listening in to your conversation as well. It offers a great 36 Mile Range, which of coarse gives you the necessary longer range communication in open areas with little or no obstruction. It has what they refer to as X-TRA TALK Power, which is the maximum allowed by law. There is also an SOS Siren, allowing you to send out distress or locater signals in an emergency situation. Another great feature is that it gives you access to the NOAA Weather Alert Radio with Weather Scan, which automatically locks on to your local weather channel and alerts you to severe weather, which is a very nice feature for those surprise weather systems.
