Catfish Dough Bait Recipe

Fishing Bait Spotlight: Catfish Dough Bait Catfish Dough Bait Catfish will bite on a lot of things, the key is knowing where to find them, and casting right on top of them. Many of the store bought baits will work very well, but I like the homemade dough baits so that I can play with the recipe a bit to get exactly what I want with the right consistency to stay on the hook, and the right amount and type of scents. I usually have some store bought catfish dough baits on hand, so when I bring my own baits, I will always have one line out with a store bought dough bait, and a home made dough bait out at the same time, and once I get two bites on one of the lines on two separate casts, I will switch both lines to the one that is working that day. Catfish Dough Bait Ingredients 1 cup of flour 1 cup of cornmeal ½ Cup of Water 2 Tablespoons of Vegetable Oil Main Ingredient - Any 1 of the following (Dice and mush them up real good) o 1 tin of sardines o 1 tub of chicken liver o 1 cup of ground up fish or meat o 1 can of tuna o 1 cup of cheese o 1 can of cream corn o 1 cup of diced minced hot dogs Additional Scent - Any 1 of the following can also be added o Anise extract or Anise Fish Attractant o ¼ cup of Garlic Salt, Granulated or Chopped Garlic o Garlic Fish Attractant o Blood Fish Attractant Additional Attractant o 1 teaspoon of glitter o 16-20 drops of food coloring to get the desired color Catfish Dough Baits Recipe Instructions Mix Dry Ingredients together in first bowl Mix wet ingredients together in second bowl Combine the bowls into one bowl and stir well until well mixed Put 2 tablespoons of flour on hard surface covered in wax paper Put the mixed ingredients onto the flour and mix well together by kneading it like dough Place into ziplock bag or tub until ready for use How to Make Dough Bait Stay on the Hook Use a dough bait treble hook that has a spring around the center of the treble hook that will hold the bait on better Add thread or string to stretch around your bait to make it stay on the hook Put your bait in a mesh medical tubular bandage, which will hold the bait solidly on the hook Keeping the Dough Bait Fresh It’s important to keep the dough bait from drying out and remaining soft and fresh so that the catfish will not spit it out when they try to eat it. To do so, always keep the dough bait out of direct sun light for long periods of time, and keep it in a ziplock bag or tupperware type container with an air tight seal. This will also keep more of the stinky scent in the bag or container instead of in the air where you have to constantly smell it. Remember, the stinkier the bait the better, but that doesn’t mean you have to make yourself sick in the process, or the guy fishing next to you, Lol. Be Safe If you added fish, meat, etc.. that can cause food poisoning, don’t forget to bring some unscented wipes to be able to wash it off your hands after your bait your hook.
