ARCHERY HUNTING BROADHEADS
How to Choose the Right Broadhead
It is critical to use the right broadhead so that you can have clean bow
kills. Some broadheads just don’t work too well, and will leave you
scouring through the woods chasing a faint blood trail. Choosing the
wrong broadhead will cost you a deer, elk, bear, or whatever type of
game you are targeting. Having a good quality broadhead will provide
every possible advantage in a critically important kill shot that can mean
the difference between sticking a great trophy on the wall, and a freezer
full of delicious meat and going home empty handed. There are three major types of broadheads, and as
you make your decision on which broadheads will work best for you, it’s important to understand the
pros and cons of each type.
Broadhead Types
1.
Fixed Blade Broadheads
2.
Replaceable Blade Broadheads
3.
Mechanical or Expandable Blade Broadheads
1.
Fixed Blade Broadheads
Fixed Blade Broadheads have been
around the longest, and have the
simplest design. Most have a tip that
will cut on impact, and penetrate better
than other broadheads, which makes
them ideal for larger tough skinned
animals like elk, bears, and Mule Deer.
One disadvantage of these broadheads
is that you have to resharpen the blades, and the flight does suffer on the faster shooting bows used
today.
G5 Striker X 4-Blade Fixed-Blade Broadhead - 100 Grain The G5® Striker X 4-Blade
Fixed-Blade Broadhead is their first model with four fixed blades, and offers bow
hunters the same deadly performance of the Striker V2, but has 33% more cutting
surface. This latest model combines a sturdy design that is built for improved flight
yet boasts a large 1-1/4" cutting diameter. The broadhead great cutting bone busting
tip for great penetration for better kill shots. The blades are strong and will deliver complete devastation
through hide and bone.
2.
Replaceable Blade Broadheads
Replaceable Blade Broadheads fly fairly
well out of most types of bows. The nice
thing that I like about these types of
broadheads is that when the blades get
dull, you just need to replace them. Most
manufacturers will include extra blades,
or sell a set of blades to replace them
with. The latest tip designs have improved
penetration and flight accuracy quite a bit. Sometimes you will lose a blade here and there when out in
the field. There are a few disadvantages of the replaceable blade broadheads. They are usually quite a
bit more expensive than fixed blades, they don’t penetrate game as well, and are not as durable.
BlackOut Toxik Replaceable Blade Broadheads The BlackOut® Toxik® replaceable-
blade broadhead is the ultimate in durability and sharpness. It has superior strength
and flight performance. The blades are super sharp, and are securely locked into the
ferrule and will remain intact with less risk to loss due to falling out. The tips are
sharp for deep penetration necessary for successful archery bow hunting.
3.
Mechanical or Expandable Blade Broadheads
Mechanical, or Expandable Blade
Broadheads offer the great flight
characteristics, which makes them the best
choice for sensitive bows. The top brand
models have outstanding penetration as
long as the game that you are shooting at
is thinskinned and standing broadside for
a perfect shot. However, penetration and
performance can suffer on deflections, or
if the broadhead penetrates the game at a sharp angle. With expandable blade broadheads it is essential
to ensure you are very disciplined in your shot selection.
G5 Outdoors Deadmeat Expandable Blade Broadhead The G5® Outdoors Deadmeat
Expandable Broadhead has a proven design. This broadhead has 3 heavy duty
stainless steel blades to deliver a wide cutting diameter for short and heavy blood
trails. This broadhead features G5's new Snaplock ball and socket collar that holds
the blades in place until impact, and then delivers a devastating knockdown power
with extreme accuracy.
