WORM FARMING FOR FISHING BAIT
Grow your own self sustaining supply of bait worms!
One of the tried and true baits that fish always bite is live bait, and for most
freshwater fish, the live bait on the top of the list of favorites is worms. I always
buy a few boxes of worms for every fishing trip, and dump the unused worms in
the flower bed. Not anymore, now I am taking on a new title of worm farmer.
Well, actually my kids are, and I will help them to get it going. Our family’s video of the process is below.
Worm Farming Is Simple and Fun
Raising worms is fairly easy. It all depends on the type of worms you buy, but most can live in a reasonable
indoor temperature of most households, but some would require refrigeration. If you plan on storing them in
your refrigerator, you should buy the smaller worm habitat kits, but if you can store them indoors you may
want to go with the larger unit to raise and grow more worms. We are going to be raising Night Crawlers, as
they are what I use for most of my fishing. The idea behind it is to always have worms at our disposal, readily
available, for our family fishing trips. Our nightcrawlers are expected, in our research, to each lay 38 worm
cocoons each year, with each cocoon producing one to two worms, that will grow to maturity and repeat the
cycle.
