Lake Tahoe is known for it’s high visibility, and perfect blue waters. You can typically see more than fifty feet deep in it’s crystal clear waters. It is located in the Sierra Nevada, straddling the state line between California and Nevada. On it’s North and South shores are fine tourist destinations with casinos, shopping, and more. At it’s deepest point it is 1645 feet deep, making it the second deepest lake in the United States.
Lake Tahoe is also known for it’s monster trout, and people come from all across the United States to take time to stay in the casino resorts and take their chances at winning a big jackpot, and fishing during the day for winning the fishing jackpot by hooking into the huge lunker trout that the lake is known for. The lake has a heavy abundance of Lake Trout, or Mackinaw. It also has a healthy population of rainbow trout, brown trout, and a reproducing population of landlocked kokanee salmon.
Trophy Trout Spoons For Lake Tahoe Fishing
The majority of fishermen like to troll for trout on this lake. Take a look at our trolling guide for more information. Check the fishing regulations to verify what you can and can’t do when it comes to minnows, as a rule of thumb you can use minnows in some of these high sierra lakes but some lakes allow you to only use minnows that you caught from the lake you are fishing in. Lake Tahoe has a lot of minnows. When you drop a minnow trap down about fifteen feet you will see the minnows swarm the trap if you put a piece of bread in it for bait. I usually drop the minnow trap down and go out and try to troll for browns with a stickbait for a half hour to an hour and check back in on my trap. Make sure you see the minnows coming to the trap to ensure you are in a good spot before you run off for a bit, otherwise you may come back empty handed.
Fishing Lake Tahoe From The Bank
Fishing from the shore or bank at Lake Tahoe can be rewarding if you find a good spot. It is a very large lake, with a depth of over 1645 feet deep, it is the third deepest lakes in North America. It is also home to some monster lunker sized fish. As mentioned earlier, the best plan for a successful fishing trip on Lake Tahoe is to go on a guided fishing trip (below). But you can do some really great fishing from the shore. Especially for some delicious rainbow trout, and sometimes a good Lake Trout or brown trout too. The best method for catching fish from the shore at Lake Tahoe is quite simply with a worm. I recommend six pound test fishing line on a six foot spinning rod. The lighter rod and reel, and the lighter fishing line the more successful you will be while fishing from the shore at Lake Tahoe. For the setup I like to use a number six hook along with a medium weight sliding sinker. I place the sinker about 18 to 24 inches above the hook and keep it from sliding down to the hook with a swivel or a small splitshot. Then hook the worm through the thick band on the worm, about a third of the way down the worm’s body and thread the top part of the worm along the hook and leave the rest of the worm dangling. Use a worm inflator to inflate the worm so it will float up off the bottom for the fish to see it. Look for a good rocky spot near a point and cast your line out and wait for ten to fifteen minutes for a fish to bite. If you don’t get a bite, reel your line in and check your bait and replace if necessary. As is standard for trout fishing, the best times to fish is early in the morning, or the evening time. If you aren’t catching anything, pick up and move along the shoreline. You can also give some fishing lures a try, like a stickbait, a spoon, or some spinners. There are many other methods you could use to catch fish on Lake Tahoe, but these are the methods that work best for our group time and time again up at the Lake of the Sky, Lake Tahoe.
