KOKANEE SHOEPEG CORN BAIT RECIPE
Make Your Own Kokanee Fishing Bait
This is the secret weapon for catching kokanee. Some people like to refer to
it as kokanee candy, or kokanee crack. You can catch kokanee with regular
kokanee lures, but when you tip the hook on your lure with shoepeg corn
you will catch more fish. When you add pink dye to the corn, and some
other ingredients, your kokanee bite will be on fire! These kokanee are
crazy for bright scented shoepeg corn. It drives them crazy, Kokanee love
this bait.
A few simple ingredients will make your shoepeg corn irresistible to kokanee. Pink Dye, a good kokanee
attracting scent, you can also add some salt to the mix if you feel that the corn is not tough enough,
though some of the dyes on the market have salt in the mix already.

Kokanee Shoepeg Corn Recipe Corn Selection
Shoepeg corn is the corn of choice for use for kokanee fishing. The kernels of regular corn are short and
large, but the shoepeg corn is skinny and tougher so they stay on the hook better.
Type of Corn: Canned Shoepeg Corn
Kokanee Shoepeg Corn Bait Recipe Color Dye Selection
Kokanee like bright colors. My top go to color is a brilliant fluorescent pink called Pro-Cure Wizard
Kokanee Killer Korn Dye. This dye does have the salt in it to toughen up the corn so it will stay on the
hook better. Other colors that work great are white, chartreuse, yellow, and red. Any color you would
choose for your lure will also work for your kokanee shoepeg corn recipe. But, the bright pink works the
best!

Kokanee Shoepeg Corn Bait Recipe Scent Attractants
When it comes to adding scent to your corn, any kokanee specific scents will work. My go to scent is
Mike’s Kokanee Scent, the white one. For me, that’s all that I add, however there are other scents that can
add additional magic to your corn. Some examples are bloody tuna scent, anise scent, shrimp scent,
garlic powder or garlic salt, and the oil or water from your can of tuna. Some people like to keep it simple
and just pick a few colors of their favorite scented fish attractant, but I find that adding the dye to the
mix makes the colors much brighter and attract more fish. But, the white Kokanee Scent from Mike’s
works the best!

Mix Up Your Kokanee Shoepeg Corn Bait Ingredients
Now it’s time to mix it all together. If you have several colors and several flavors, mix them separately.
Drain the water out of the can of corn, and put half of the plain corn in the freezer for your next trip.
Take the rest of the corn and separate it out into a few ziploc bags or small tupperware, if you want to
make a few different flavors or colors. Mix one color dye, and one kokanee scent, or one colored fish
attractant in each bag. This is where I drop another hint to put in the White kokanee scent, and the
fluorescent pink dye, because this is the main one that works for me. After you mix the corn and the
ingredients that you prefer, be sure to refrigerate the corn or it will go bad. Make your corn the night
before your fishing trip. If you keep it in the ice chest, it will last for several days of fishing.
Kokanee Corn Bait Mixing Tips:
•
Ziploc Bag, or Tiny Tupperware works great
•
Mix up a few batches in separate bags or containers with different mixes of dye’s, scents, and other
ingredients
•
Drain the juice from the can and put half of the can in a ziploc in the freezer for your next trip
•
Mix it up the night before your trip for the salt to strengthen the corn and for the colors and scents to
soak up good into the corn
•
Keep cold, refrigerate overnight, and keep it in the ice chest while you are out on the water so it will
last longer and not get mushy
